Improvised and Non-Lethal Self-Defense

By Tim Gamble

When self-defense becomes necessary, a gun (and knowing how to use it) is usually the best option. Unfortunately, there are many situations in life where carrying a gun isn't an option. What then?

The best line of self-defense is always to avoid danger in the first place. This is where situational awareness, local knowledge, and commonsense comes into play.

For improvised or non-lethal self defense, your first option is using your hands for self-defense, which assumes a certain level of physical fitness (but you don't have to be a world-class athlete). Take a course in non-lethal self-defense. These courses are sometimes offered for free or low-cost at YMCAs, YWCAs, schools, community colleges, community centers, and so forth. Perhaps you can even talk your church into sponsoring such a course. A good self-defense course won't just cover the physical aspects of self-defense, but also give tips and advice on avoiding dangerous situations in the first place.

Next, consider taking up a martial art of some sort (such as karate or judo). Learning a martial art can be a fun hobby, provide considerable health and fitness benefits. improve self-confidence, and give you a life-long self-defense skill set. I especially urge parents to get their kids involved in martial arts at a young age. And you are never too old, as most good martial arts instructors will tailor your program to fit your age, health, and current fitness level.

Improvised and Non-Lethal Self-Defense Weapons:
  • Extra Loud Whistle or Keychain Alarm (Amazon link) - Can surprise or scare the attacker, and draws attention of others.
  • Prepper Spray (Amazon link) - Learn how to use before you need to use. Not always legal everywhere.
  • Heavy Duty Cane or Walking Stick (Amazon link) - Can be used for blocking or striking.
  • Heavy Duty Flashlight (Amazon link) - Can be used for blocking or striking.
  • Self-Defense Flashlight (Amazon link) - Designed for self-defense, with bright strobing lights to confuse or blind the attacker, or even with stunning capability.
  • Sturdy Umbrella (Amazon link) - Can be used for blocking or striking.
  • Baseball Bat (Amazon link) - Consider carrying  one in your vehicle. You never know when you'll need to go to the batting cages.
  • Sock with Coins - A possible airplane option. You wear socks. You can have a couple of rolls of quarters in your pocket or carry-on bag. Put coins in sock. Bash terrorist upside the head.
  • Tactical Pen (Amazon link) - Interesting option for the office, or just to carry with you. The ones I have also write extremely well. Often are not confiscated by TSA (depends on what agent checks you). You can find videos on how to use these for self-defense.
Legalities:

Unfortunately, self-defense laws vary greatly from state-to-state, and even city-to-city within the same state. Not all improvised self-defense weapons are legal everywhere. Even how one jurisdiction defines self-defense will vary from another jurisdiction. The legalities are complicated. Know the laws in your area. Don't just assume you know them.

It should go without saying, but never threaten someone first. It is not self-defense if you start it.

A Final Word: Money and "stuff" can be replaced. Your life cannot be. If a bad guy with a gun gets the drop on you in a simple mugging situation, just give him your wallet or purse. I promise your life is worth more than your cash.

Potassium Iodide (affiliate link) is currently available at Refuge Medical. It is available without prescription. According to the CDC "People should take KI (potassium iodide) only on the advice of public health or emergency management officials. There are health risks associated with taking KI." But when you need them, there will NOT be time to order them. This is one of those items you should keep on-hand and hope you never need them. Learn more on the CDC website by clicking here
