Dear Shadow Tribe,
I posted the following earlier today on X, and have decided to post it here in slightly expanded form:
This post is probably going to piss off many folks, especially the guilty.
I've been deep in the online prepper/survivalist world since the early 2000s (under various handles). Offline since the late '80s. I've watched the community evolve over decades. What I'm seeing now is unprecedented levels of fear-mongering, paranoia, and outright hysteria that dwarf anything from past eras.
A big driver? Attention economics. Too many creators, podcasters, YouTubers, and influencers competing for views, clicks, subs, and sponsors.
The playbook is predictable: click-bait and overly-sensational headlines, endless worst-case scenarios, and constant gloom and doom. Content that is little more than fear-mongering, exaggeration, and even out-right lies. All to get more clicks.
It whips the entire community into a frenzy, feeding on itself until otherwise rational prepping turns into all-consuming dread.
Vigilance is smart. Prepping thoughtfully is wise. But living in perpetual fear? That's not resilience. It is stupid. It is exhausting and counterproductive.
Relax, folks. The world isn't ending tomorrow, or even next week. Sure, bad things happen, but we will survive. We always do.
Be smart. Stay aware. Build real skills and supplies. Build tribe. Enjoy life. Balance is the key.
Prep smart. Fear less. Thrive more.
