Civil Defense (part 1 of a series)

By Tim Gamble

Considering the current state of the world, now is a good time to review the topic of civil defense. Civil defense being the protection of civilians during a time of war, the military and civilian resistance to invading forces, and preparations for rebuilding after the war. (there are better and longer definitions, but I think this one works  for our purposes.) Also, many aspects of Civil Defense against foreign aggression could be applied to domestic enemies such as a tyrannical government.

War could mean a full-scale invasion of the country, an invasion of certain parts of the country, military and economic blockades, biological attacks, coordinated physical attacks on critical unfractured (the electrical grid, trains, food processing centers, etc.), cyberattacks on critical infrastructure (the financial system, the medical system, etc.), limited nuclear attacks on a small number of strategic sites, or a full-scale nuclear attack on dozens or even hundreds of targets.

Whatever the details of the crisis, disruption to civilian life could be overwhelming and long-lasting. America, and most Western countries, are not prepared. The thoughts of a nuclear war, or even an actual invasion of our country, is too frightening or too overwhelming for some folks to even consider. They hide behind the phycological crutches of "it could never actually happen here" or, particularly in the case of nuclear war, "it would be unsurvivable anyway" and if it does happen "we would be better off dead.

But I believe it can happen. And I, for one, would rather live and help others live, than to simply turn over and die. To that end, for the next several articles, I am going to take a deep dive into the topic of Civil Defense. I hope you will join me.
