I want to bring everyone's attention to a great video I just watched for the first time, Local Food as Parallel Agriculture (click the video title to watch it on YouTube). It is a 15-munite speech given at Hillsdale College earlier this year by Joel Salatin.
Joel Salatin and his family own Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. He is also the author of a number of books, including You Can Farm: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Start & Succeed in a Farming Enterprise and Polyface Micro: Success with Livestock on a Homestead Scale. (Click the book titles to find them on Amazon.)
Mr. Salatin gives some eye-popping information during this speech. Just one example: there are now more prison inmates than farmers in America. But what really caught my attention is how in-line what Salatin is talking about with the concept of Biblical Agrarianism that I have been talking about. Please take 15 minutes to watch this video. You won't regret it.
For those who don't know, Biblical Agrarianism is a return to the old paths of self-reliance and local economies built around agrarian communities. It doesn't mean everyone has to be a farmer or homesteader, just that our society and government should revolve around the importance of food production and other natural resources on a local scale.
